Soft-skills training builds valuable behaviours. Sentence-level wording is a separate layer that broad training often doesn’t reach.

Communication, presence, assertiveness and conflict-resolution courses are delivered widely across organisations, and much of what they cover is genuinely useful: how to structure a difficult conversation, how to read a room, how to prepare for a negotiation.
What this kind of training doesn’t always reach is the sentence. Objectives such as “be more assertive” or “communicate with confidence” describe a desired outcome without specifying which wording changes to make on a Monday morning email.
Two different things being worked on
Behaviour, eye contact, pacing, whether someone speaks early in a meeting, is one layer of communication, and general training addresses it well. Wording, which clause opens a sentence, whether a statement is qualified, whether responsibility is attributed clearly, is a separate layer, and it isn’t always covered by the same training.
That means someone can complete a genuinely valuable workshop on assertive communication and still open their next email with “sorry to bother you” before a routine, entirely reasonable request, not because the training failed, but because that specific sentence wasn’t part of what it addressed.

- , Reading back your own recent messages, rather than working from model examples.
- , Naming a specific construction, an apology, a qualifier, a framing choice, rather than a general impression.
- , Checking it against the facts: is there genuine uncertainty, is there actual fault, does this need to be framed this way?
- , Revising only where the wording doesn’t match the facts, and leaving the rest as it is.
This is not a case for stripping softness, warmth or qualification out of professional writing. All three have legitimate uses, and removing them indiscriminately produces writing that is blunter without being more accurate.
Different tools for different problems
Broad communication training and sentence-level language review solve different problems. One builds confidence, presence and interpersonal skill across a range of situations. The other looks at the specific wording a person defaults to and checks it against what they actually mean. Neither replaces the other, and most professionals benefit from both.
